CHR: Ensure polls are safe and peaceful, especially in BARMM

Following a recent ambush in Lanao del Sur, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) wants intensified efforts to ensure safe and peaceful polls, particularly in the Bangsamoro Region.

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has called for intensified collective action to ensure safe and peaceful elections, particularly in the Bangsamoro Region, following a recent ambush involving a barangay official in Lanao del Sur.

It also expressed alarm over the incident despite the ongoing gun ban implementation for the upcoming 2025 national and local polls.

“This latest act of violence is a stark reminder of the urgent need to intensify efforts to uphold peace, safeguard human rights, and ensure the protection of political participation, particularly in the Bangsamoro Region,” the CHR said in a statement last April 12.

“Any threat to public officials and political candidates undermines democratic values and hampers the creation of an inclusive and secure environment for all,” it added.

Binhar Jalambre Alon Hawad, chairperson of Barangay Baraas in Picong, Lanao del Sur, was gunned down last April 9 while en route to a graduation ceremony. His companion, Norhan Comilao Sarip, meanwhile, sustained injuries to his legs.

The five unidentified suspects remain at large as of posting time.

In its statement, the CHR said it has already initiated an independent investigation of the case under its mandate.

“The CHR acknowledges the swift response of law enforcement agencies in the region and echoes the call for a thorough and impartial investigation,” it also said.

“Holding perpetrators accountable is vital, not only to deliver justice, but also to restore public confidence—especially among voters—in the safety and integrity of the electoral process,” the CHR added.
